C.J. Stermer developed an early appreciation for his work with the LGBT community while growing up in rural North Carolina. During his time at Appalachian State University, C.J. quickly understood the vital importance of diversity and inclusion within our communities, devoting much of his time to a plethora of student leadership organizations, in order to educate and empower other young adults. While earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, he and his peers developed and executed various campus-wide initiatives to provide an environment in which young adults could recognize and cultivate their own professional leadership skills, within a safe and diverse atmosphere.

Upon completing his undergraduate degree, C.J. continued working as a conference coordinator at Columbia University, in New York City, and American University, in Washington DC, where he developed his knack for understanding complicated logistics and the importance of networking. Swiftly recognizing the impact of the meeting and event industry, he spent several years working for Courtesy Associates/SmithBucklin Corporation on various government meeting contracts, creating a comprehensive setting for collaboration, education and social change.

C.J.’s event experience spans from city-wide conferences and tradeshows, to benefit concerts, street festivals, charity fundraisers and many large stage show productions. He has had the opportunity to work with prestigious celebrities, congressional leaders and his personal favorite, Michelle Obama. Most recently, C.J. has implemented his knowledge of the meeting and the event industry by advocating for diversity in the LGBT community, offering much of his experience in volunteer efforts with LGBT non-profits benefiting the military, youth organizations and business leaders. Through his work with the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, C.J. developed strategic relationships with local, state and federal LGBT leaders in government and non-profit roles.

A recent transplant to Los Angeles, CA from the east coast, C.J. joins the Rescue team as the National Director for LGBT Events. He spends a lot of his spare time in the kitchen experimenting with his cooking skills or enjoying the SoCal weather outdoors. Promoting a fit, active and healthy lifestyle is one of C.J.’s greatest passions and you can often find him at the top of local hiking trails in LA.
